White House Admits It Destroyed Public Records Relating To Criminal InvestigationThe Bush White House has finally admitted, just four minutes before a midnight deadline on Tuesday, that it destroyed years of public records, including some pertaining to a criminal investigation of White House officials. The records were backups of emails that were also destroyed. The White House justifies its destruction of the records by saying that doing so is "consistent with industry best practices". What President George W. Bush clearly does not understand is that the federal government of the United States of America is not an industry. Our government is supposed to be of the people, by the people, and for the people. It therefore is expected to follow standards that are higher than those adopted by big business. For example, the White House is expected to follow laws that require it to keep records of its activities - whether those records are electronic or not. By destroying public records kept in the form of email, the Bush White House has broken the law. Because those records pertain to a criminal investigation involving the purposeful betrayal of an undercover CIA officer, the destruction of those emails rises to the level of a high crime - an impeachable crime. |
