Senate Candidate Steve Pearce Gets Most Dirty Oil MoneyOver at the That's My Congress blog, they've rightly taken Ron Paul to task for taking a huge amount of financial donations funneled to him by dirty oil corporations. However, the fact is that Ron Paul is not the member of the U.S. House of Representatives who has taken the most money from big oil. That title has been taken by Republican Congressman Steve Pearce. Representative Pearce has taken more money from polluting fossil fuel corporations than any other member of the U.S. House. Of course, there's a lot more wrong with Steve Pearce's record in Congress than just the huge amount of money he has taken from petroleum companies that pollute the environment and contribute to the climate crisis New Mexico is facing as a result of global warming. Steve Pearce has voted for some of the worst policies in Washington D.C. over the last few years, including efforts to establish a big government spying program that targets law-abiding American citizens, and an attempt to legalize religious discrimination in Head Start programs. Still, Steve Pearce's financial links to executives from big oil companies are especially troubling. Pearce has taken 102,900 dollars from oil and gas companies so far, and he's just getting his election started. What makes the situation even worse is that, this year, Steve Pearce isn't running just for a seat in Congress to represent New Mexico's second congressional district. This year, Pearce is running for a seat in the United States Senate, to represent all of New Mexico. That's a lot more power for a politician with such a strong connection to the out-of-date, corrupt petroleum industry. In these times of record high gasoline prices combined with record high oil company profits, New Mexico needs somebody in the United States Senate who is not in the back pocket of the big oil corporations.
If Steve Pearce loves the oil corporations so much, why doesn't he just go work for them? Oh, wait. That was a dumb question. Steve Pearce is working for the oil corporations already... as a member of the United States Congress.
No matter how he has maneuvered to cozy up with oil industry fat cats, Steve Pearce is wrong for New Mexico. |
